Today a read on itv.com an article about Gary McKinnon. I didn't know about Gary criminal accusations, but the fact he was diagnosed as Asperger by Cambridge University professor Simon Baron-Cohen call my attention..

Gary McKinnon, 42, faces up to 70 years in prison if he is found guilty of gaining access to and damaging 97 American Navy, Army, Nasa and Pentagon computers. An autism expert has backed a British computer hacker in his bid to avoid extradition to the US.

Simon said:
"If, as I believe, the crime was committed through naivety and through an obsession - in this case with computers and trying to find information - without any intent to deceive, without any attempt to hide what he was doing, we should be thinking about this as the activity of somebody with a disability rather than a criminal activity."

It's a irony is not that autistic hackers are invading modern US computers systems. But that many scientists who build/invented many US computer systems, computer languages, computer crypt algorithms and computer protocols such as TCP/IP, FTP, HTTP, SMTP, SNTP, UDP, ICMP could be consider as Asperger's by just applying a simple pschycological test assessment. If this is not the case, certainly their children have traits.

There is an old english proverb depicting the situation:
He was caught in his own web/trap.

Take a look on the important universities on US. Many couples (who are scientists) are having babies with Asperger traits, who will probably grow up learnig computer systems, and invanding others computers with no insight of the real consequencces for them or for other people.

You know, there must be some respect from authorities for those intelligent subjets who spend hours writing codes, decifering problems and build solutions...

As Simon mentioned about Mr McKinnon's behaviour :
it is typical of the "social naivety" that is common in people with Asperger's Syndrome. It can bring a sort of tunnel vision so that in their pursuit of the truth they are blind to the potential social consequences for them or for other people
.

I personally think it is unfair to thoses acts as criminal acts. I totally agree with Simon and I would say its completly different from bomb terrorists who spread terror around the world killing inocent people. Give him a computer job(maybe an assistantship research job) rather than sentence him to jail for 70 years.
